t seemed to have been years since I’d been outside smelling the fresh air. Of course, it wasn’t that long but recovering from a broken ankle took a long time, especially being a senior. Now , with a boot on my ankle, I wanted to get out in nature. Wondering if there was any availability at the Arboretum, I quickly pulled out my computer. Going to the reservation page and low and behold there was a spot in a couple of hours. Packing up my photographic equipment and grabbing my trekking pole I headed to my car. Observing myself, excitement was starting to permeate all my being, and it was getting harder to drive slowly. Finally I saw a sign telling me I was in Chanhassan, the home. of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
All that I wanted the day was to smell the flowers, let the wind run through my hair, and breathe in the fresh air. Using my walking stick I was able to make it to the rose garden, and take a few photographs. Sitting on a bench, resting my ankle I spied a field of red, could this be a composition. After resting a little longer, I limped over to the field of flowers. The formation of these flowers told me this configuration was the begining of a beautiful piece of art.
Moving with a boot on my leg was extremely difficult, especially maintaining balance. Happily, my trekking pole was a my side to assist me in walking and retaining my stability. Wondering if it would be possible to get the composition I wanted without crouching. Barely able to stay upright my mind told me this would be a short visit.
This was not my first orthopedic surgery, so I had learned to listen to my body and not do too much. Through these surgeries it was necessary to practice patience. Previous outings had told me I was good at photographing flowers, so I knew a good view would be available in my camera. My inner self told me I could last another fifteen minutes before I had to head to my car.
Starting out just wanting to get some fresh air, the breeze was awash with the sweet smell of the soft field of flowers. I was wondering how long my ankle would last. Hoping my trip would last for at least an hour, walking from my car, doubt filled my mind. The sun washed over my body, warming me up, asking me if I could stay a little longer feeling the sun. I was glad it was a balmy day as it allowed me to rest on the cool benches very often. The touch of these seats gave me comfort as I rested. Finally I saw my prey and started photographing it, from a sitting position. After only a few photographs standing up, I knew I needed to rest before strolling back to my car.
Normally, I set up my angles and light from a lot of positiions. This was impossible on this day, as standing was not my friend, so it was going to be a sitting shoot. Knowing no editing, what was in the camera had to produce my masterpiece that I was hoping for. Getting up was not easy as my balance kept telling me to rest longer.
Finally with the help of my trekking pole I was able to stand, a little wobbly but upright just the same. Having taken only a few photographs, I did not expect to find anything worth saving. It was vital that once I got to my car that I rested before driving the forty-five minutes home. In one way my goal had been met with a half hour of sun and fresh air. However had that been long enough for a fruitful photographic adventure? Only time and my computer would tell if there was a keeper in my camera. Upon arriving at my home again it was a necessity to rest before I went up to my apartment on the third floor. I took my laptop out and inserted the adapter into it, then next came the camera card. During the upload I felt apprehensive what would show up on my computer, surprisingly a couple of the photographs seemed respectable. Sorting through the results I found this special photograph.
After taking a nap, I felt revived and again looked at what had been downloaded. All the way home I had wondered if I had achieved anyhing other than feeling the sun and smelling the fresh air. The addition of a couple of good photographs just made my day. My mind was at peace and the experience, although short had been well worth it.
